The Gateway Kartplex — the St. Louis region’s state-of-the-art go-kart racing facility located inside the superspeedway at Gateway Motorsports Park — will open its summer-fall iDrive Kart Racing League season on Wednesday, Aug. 3.

The six-race series will be contested at the Gateway Kartplex on Aug. 3, Aug. 24, Sept. 14, Sept. 28, Oct. 12 and Oct. 26. The championship event will take place on Oct. 29.

The iDrive series is the first level of karting competition and offers prospective racers the opportunity to compete minus the expense of purchasing a kart, spare parts and safety gear. The entry fee is $75 per event and the Kartplex supplies everything needed, including the competition-tuned kart and safety equipment. Event registration takes place from 3-6:45 p.m. with qualifying at 7:10 p.m. Racing takes place within two weight classes (140-190 lbs. and 191+ lbs.). Each participant receives a five-minute qualifying session and competes in two 15-lap races.

“This is an excellent and economical way for novice racers to get started, then move on to more competitive classes,” said Keith Scharf, General Manager of the Gateway Kartplex. “Quite a few of last year’s iDrive competitors now are kart owners. Several of them not only race in our weekly Ignite and SuperComp Series at the Kartplex but also now travel with the Margay factory team to national races all over the country. This season they have competed at Daytona, Charlotte and Indianapolis — as well as the nearby I-55 Challenge Series in Springfield, Illinois.”

“Most every successful driver from all forms of motorsports — Formula 1, IndyCar and NASCAR has roots in kart racing,” Scharf added. “Three-time Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton and four-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Jeff Gordon both trace their racing roots back to karting.”

End-of-season awards include Kartplex credit ($400 for first place, $200 for second and $100 for third), trophies and the opportunity to compete in the season-ending championship shootout. The championship shootout winner is awarded a factory-sponsored Margay Ignite K3 kart for the 2017 Ignite racing season.
